Seperation Anxiety

Your dog can learn to be home alone

verlatingsangst 2

The door slams shut and your stomach hurts again. On the other side of the door, you can hear your dog barking. Because staying home alone is not possible. The dogsitter is fully booked and the dog walking service is not available. Friends and family all know perfectly well how to solve this. But their well-intentioned (unsolicited) advice leads to nothing but stress and drama.

Do you recognize this?

  • Your dog barks continuously if you leave him home alone.
  • The furniture will be demolished when you return.
  • There is poop or pee in the house again, when you come back.
  • The neighbors are starting to complain more and more.
  • You never leave your house without stress.

You can't find a dogsitter

Dogsitters or dogwalkers are fully booked. And to be fair, it should be possible to go out for a few hours. Without your dog. But what if your dog can't handle that? And freaks out when you leave?

I have tried this method myself and it works
Easy for me to say as a dog trainer? Unfortunately. I wish it were true. My dogs were no exception to the rule. And they are not robots 😉. My first dog Daisy, I could never leave without her, or she would bark until I got back. The advice I got a few years ago?

"Wait until she stops barking, she will learn."

I'm so sorry I gave in to that. It didn't get any better. It only got worse! And my heart still breaks when I think back to what I did to her back then.

It started with going to the toilet
Then we got Teddy. Our sweet puppy. I was so happy! I couldn't be out of sight for a second without him getting upset. As soon as I got up and walked towards a door, he was already stressed. Teddy didn't know what to do and started pacing around the room. Advice? Don't go too fast. I can tell you; that's quite difficult if your puppy gets stressed so quickly.

The solution that works

Of course, there is much more to it. Together with a specialist in separation anxiety, we started practicing and started training. It took me and the puppy hardly any effort to do the exercises. By making small adjustments to the routines, we were able to be alone longer and longer. It doesn't happen automatically. But the result is more than worth it.

How would you like it if:

  • Your dog is fine with being home alone
  • The neighbors greet you and pet your dog
  • You leave without any guilt
  • You never have to worry about needing a dog sitter again.

Disclaimer
The training is not meant for leaving your dog home alone all day. Dogs need attention and should be walked regularly. Your dog can be at home alone for up to 4 hours a day with a maximum of 5 hours.

What we do

Your dog is not going to do it on its own. Without the right approach, you're making the problem worse rather than better.

We are going to:

-          Exercise 4 to 5 times a week.

-          Hire a dog sitter for at least six months.

-          Training at the pace of your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common nonsense advice?

  • A lot is going on on forums and social media. Unfortunately, what I see and read is mostly thin air. For example, the advice "You just have to leave your dog alone and build up the time". "Give your dog a treat when you leave to calm him down." “Close the curtains, then he has fewer stimuli”. They are all blisters on a sore wound, which do not sufficiently cover the wound. This kind of advice does not solve the problem and does not prevent separation anxiety.

How can I be sure this will work?

  • You will train at the pace of your dog. Which means you never cross his limits. This way you don't crush his confidence and his confidence will grow. Dogs only learn when they are laid back and relaxed.

What's in the training?

  • You get access to a personal environment in an app. This makes it easy to follow the training wherever you want. A new workout will be added to the app every day. You also get training videos, with PDF files in which everything is explained again.

When will my dog benefit from training?

  • Separation anxiety is sometimes misunderstood. But you can tell whether your dog is stressed when you want to leave. If you even think about getting groceries without your dog, he will start pacing around. Starts whining. He will ask for extra attention from you. He will wait near the door. Or do you hear your dog barking and whining 9 out of 10 times when you are away for a while?

Is this training suitable for us?

  • This training is intended for owners with a dog who has difficulty being home alone. This can be noticed, with restless behavior, barking and howling, demolition, or incontinence. Are you in doubt whether your dog has separation anxiety and whether this training is suitable for you? Please contact me first for a free screening call.

Am I guaranteed to get something out of it?

  • Yes, you will learn to look at your dog's behavior and recognize his stress signals. This will lay the foundation for separation anxiety. So you will benefit from this on many different fronts!

Why Do Dogs Have Separation Anxiety?

  • There is no simple answer to that. Between 3 and 12 weeks of age, puppies get to know the world better. All the experiences that puppies gain during this period are partly the basis of behavior later in life. Being alone has to be taught to a puppy. If this was built up incorrectly in the past when your dog was a puppy, this can still cause problems now. That is why you help your dog enormously by teaching him or her to relax again when you are not around. You will learn how to do this in a responsible manner.
